The Wall, and the One Who Goes First

What it is

Triceratops is the reason the plains are habitable. It is the only animal on the roster that reliably makes an apex predator reconsider, and the migrations it triggers move every herbivore on the map. Kill the males who scout and the herds stop moving; the range overgrazes, and everything downstream of that starves.

What playing it feels like

Two completely different games depending on your sex, and that is deliberate. As a female you live in a slow, dense, defensive knot — you eat with others around you, you turn toward things rather than away, and the hardest thing you will ever do is hold position while something enormous decides whether to commit. As a male you are alone for almost all of it, walking ground nobody has checked, and the most important thing you do all year is decide whether a valley is safe and leave a mark saying so. Hundreds of animals will act on that mark. Sometimes you are wrong.

300 M · A LIFE

Growing up Triceratops

28.0 hours hatch to adult at 1× growth, across 5 stages. Server growth multiplier scales the real figure.

Calf

6.0 h · 12% size · 6.0 h parental

You live behind a wall of legs. Your mother is the only animal that will actually put itself between you and something — the rest of the herd holds its shape and lets her do it — so you learn very early to read where she is without looking. You cannot gore, you cannot thrash, and your horns are nubs. What you can do is stay inside, and staying inside is the entire skill.

Group rule
Inside the formation at all times. Counts as one of the two permitted juveniles in an engagement while at or below 35%.
Your parent
She screens you personally. She will not scatter, she will not yield ground, and she will hold a losing position over you rather than reposition. If she dies you are not adopted; the herd keeps its formation and you are outside it.
Coat

Juvenile

8.0 h · 35% size · 2.0 h parental

Your horns come in and you are suddenly worth something to the wall — half an adult's worth, and you will feel the difference the first time you turn to face alongside the others instead of hiding behind them. You are also, at 35%, about to stop being protected. Every rule that shields you has the same number written on it, and you can watch it coming.

Group rule
May present horns and contribute +7.5% to the formation. This is the last stage at which you count as a permitted juvenile.
Your parent
She stops screening and starts expecting you to face. The bond does not end; the shielding does.
Coat
natal

Sub-Adult

8.0 h · 68% size

This is where the two lives split. If you are female you take a full place in the wall and start learning the formation properly — who anchors, who covers a flank, how far you may step forward before you have opened a gap behind you. If you are male you begin leaving. Not dramatically; you simply start going further for longer, and one day you do not come back, and nobody comes to find you.

Group rule
Full adult formation slot. Males may begin ranging out; females remain with the herd.
Coat
natal fading

Adult

6.0 h · 100% size

Female: you hold. You eat inside a shape, you turn toward problems, and once a year you raise something that only you will defend. Male: you walk. You cross ground that has not been checked by anything, you decide whether it is safe, and you leave a mark that hundreds of animals will believe. Then in Australis you come back, and you fight another male head-on for the right to breed, and then you leave again.

Group rule
Herd up to 8. Engagement cap of 3 adults plus 2 juveniles at or below 35%. Males solitary outside Australis.

Elder

terminal · 104% size

You are the slowest thing in a species that was already slow, and you are the hardest thing on the map to move. Elder Triceratops anchor the formation because anchoring does not require speed — it requires being unwilling to step back, and you have had a long time to practise. Your horns tell the whole story by now. The algae on your frill says how long you have stood still.

Dull olive-grey with a pale frill margin and no horn colour. A calf is meant to read as part of the herd's shadow rather than as an animal, which is exactly where it is supposed to be standing.

Sub-Adult

Olive warms toward brown and the frill margin begins taking colour. The horns darken at the base. A sub-adult is the first stage that reads as a distinct animal at distance, and it is also the first stage predators price accordingly.

600 M · TERRITORY & BREEDING

Ground, courtship and the nest

Territory

Male — claims nothing, nomadic. A solitary male claims nothing and crosses everything. He is not wandering — he is surveying, and the map he builds in one season is what the whole species moves on.

Female — claims nothing. Herds hold a browse range they move through and do not defend. Triceratops yield ground readily; what they do not yield is the formation.

Courtship

Blunt and structural. Males arrive, males collide, one of them stops. There is no display flirtation between the sexes — the frill flush is aimed at the other male.

  1. Australis opens; frill flush rises in both sexes.
  2. Solitary males converge on herds from the ground they have been surveying.
  3. Males contest head-on. Horn condition is assessed before contact and often decides it without one.
  4. The victor breeds with the receptive females of that herd.
  5. The loser withdraws and does not re-enter that herd's range this cycle.

The nest

Clutch of 2–6 (typical 4), tended by the mother.

modest; the herd's formation caps how many calves can be screened at once

TIER 3

The Migration

For males. Hundreds of animals moved because of something you left on a rock.

TIER 3
