The One That Leaves
What it is
Tenontosaurus is the roster's calibration animal and its most important prey. It is what an Allosaurus pack is built to hunt and what a young apex learns to fail against. A server where Tenonto are easy is a server where the predators have gotten ahead; a server where nobody can catch one is a server where they have not.
What playing it feels like
Vigilance, then a decision made far too quickly. You spend most of a Tenonto life watching, taking your turn at the edge of the herd, and eating with your head up. The rest of it happens in about four seconds: something commits, you land a kick or you do not, and then you run in a direction you should have chosen before you needed it. The animals that survive are not the ones that fight well. They are the ones that had already picked the direction.

11.0 hours hatch to adult at 1× growth,
across 5 stages. Server growth multiplier
scales the real figure.
Calf
2.0 h
· 12% size · 2.0 h parental
You know one animal and you follow her. Not the herd — her. You can see the others and they mean nothing to you yet; the world is one adult's flank and the small distance you are allowed to be from it. You cannot kick hard enough to matter and your tail is decorative. If she goes down, you have a very short window to attach yourself to another adult before something notices you are on your own.
- Group rule
- Must remain within sight of your mother or an adopting adult. A calf alone is not a Tenontosaurus, it is a meal.
- Your parent
- She keeps you on the inside of the herd, puts herself between you and open ground, and will hold her position instead of scattering if you are the one being pursued.

Juvenile
2.5 h
· 30% size · 1.0 h parental
You start eating without checking where she is every few seconds, and that is the whole of this stage: learning that the herd is also protection, not just her. Your kick now does something. Not enough, but something, and the first time you land one on anything you will overestimate what it bought you.
- Group rule
- herd member; not eligible for sentry duty
- Your parent
- She stops screening you and starts letting the herd do it. The bond persists but the obligation loosens.

Sub-Adult
3.0 h
· 62% size
You take your first watch. Standing at the herd edge with your head up while everyone behind you eats is the most exposed a Tenontosaurus ever chooses to be, and it is the first thing you do that the herd actually needs. Your kick is close to full weight now. You are also, for the first time, the size of animal an Allosaurus pack considers worth committing to.

misjudging a scatter
You take watch, you eat, you move when the herd moves, and once a year you raise something. There is no rank to climb and nothing to win. What there is instead is a running judgement about where the exits are, made every few minutes for the whole of your life, and the day you stop making it is the day it matters that you stopped.
- Group rule
- Herd of 2–8. May overpack with its own kind during Migration. No rank. Sentry duty rotates.

Elder
terminal
· 103% size
You are slower than you were and you were never fast. What you have is a map of every place this herd has ever been caught, and elders take the edge shift more often than young adults do because they are better at it and because they have less to lose. An elder Tenontosaurus almost always dies on watch. That is not a tragedy in this species. It is the role.

Olive-brown with a broken pale dorsal stripe and heavy flank dappling. Built to disappear against a grazing herd's legs, which is exactly where a calf is supposed to be.

Sub-Adult
The dappling coarsens and the dorsal stripe breaks up. A sub-adult stops reading as 'inside the herd' and starts reading as a separate animal — which is the visual moment predators begin treating it as a target.
Adult coat through the year
Primavera
olive-brown, winter dulling shed
Floralis
bright olive; flank dapple at maximum contrast
Solara I
tan; olive withdraws to the dorsal line
Solara II
pale tan, near-dust; dapple almost invisible
Solara III
tan, dust-matted
Monsoon I
dark olive; wet coat reads near-black
Monsoon II
dark olive, permanently wet
Monsoon III
olive fading toward brown
Australis
brown-olive with throat and flank flush in both sexes
Hibernalis
grey-brown, thickening
Gelidus
grey-brown, palest of the year
Modifiers
rain — darkens sharply; dapple lost
heat wave — bleaches to near-dust
alarm — flank dapple tightens visibly — the herd reads this before the call
biome redwoods — one shade darker; dapple broadens
biome plains — one shade paler; dapple tightens
600 M · TERRITORY & BREEDING
Ground, courtship and the nest
Territory
This species claims no ground.
Tenontosaurus claims nothing. The herd holds a browse range it moves through and abandons freely, and it will yield ground to almost anything rather than contest it. A Tenonto herd that stands its ground over territory is out of profile.
Courtship
Quiet and brief. Tenontosaurus courtship is a matter of proximity and tolerance rather than display or contest — there is no rank to advertise and no ground to prove.
- Both sexes flush at the throat and flank through Australis.
- Pairs form by sustained proximity within the herd.
- There is no contest, no display bout and no exclusion.
- Pairs dissolve after laying. There is no ongoing bond.
The nest
Clutch of 3–7
(typical 5), tended by the
mother.
modest; the herd's size caps how many calves it can screen

Tenontosaurus.
Calf
- Reach Juvenile without ever being separated from your mother in a scatter
- Graze inside the herd, never on its outside edge
Juvenile
- Land a kick that buys you distance you actually use
- Survive a scatter on a line you chose in advance
Sub-Adult
- Take your first sentry rotation and hold it without grazing
- Break a pursuit and stay off the herd's route until the bleed resolves
Adult
- Complete sentry rotations across a full month
- Raise a calf to Juvenile, or adopt one that was orphaned
- Walk a Migration with the herd
Elder
- Reach the Elder threshold alive
- Take the edge shift more often than the adults do
- Stand over a calf that is not yours
Milestone feats
Optional. They still count toward mastery.
The Pack Turned
Four of them committed. None of them finished.
Eight and Intact
A full herd through a scatter, and the same eight afterwards.
The Orphan
You took it in and it walked out of the calf stage.
Never Caught
A whole life. Nothing ever closed the distance.
The Long Year
All twelve months, one animal, one herd.
The Last Watch
Elders usually die on it. You will know if this one is yours.
Two Calves
Your own, and one that was not, screened at the same time.
Dry Crossing
A Solara II, the whole herd, and the water that was not where it should have been.
