Hypsilophodon
Hypsilophodon is the smallest thing on the roster that can meaningfully ruin a predator's day, and it does it with a mouthful of irritant spit. The animal is tiny, fast and functionally defenceless in any straight contest, but it carries a directional spit that blinds and stings at close range — enough to break an ambush at the exact moment the ambusher has committed. It does not win the fight. It wins the two seconds that make the fight unnecessary.

That single trick shapes the whole species. A Hypsilophodon does not flee first and defend second the way most small herbivores do; it holds its nerve fractionally longer than an animal its size has any business holding, because the spit only works if the target is close. Watching a group get approached is watching a collective judgement call being made in real time — the moment one animal breaks, they all break, and the timing of that break is the difference between a group that escapes intact and a group that loses its slowest member.
They are the roster's most genuinely communal nesters. Hypsilophodon build clustered scrapes in sheltered ground and tend them collectively: any adult in the colony will sit a nest that is not its own, and hatchlings that emerge into a colony are fed and shielded by whoever is nearest rather than by a specific parent. There is no individual maternal recognition and no bloodline jealousy. The colony is the reproductive unit, which is why the loss of a colony site is a far heavier blow to the species than the loss of any number of individual animals.
Colony size is self-limiting in a way that surprises people. Above roughly a dozen adults the scrapes start to crowd, disturbance rises, and the collective alarm response degrades into noise — too many animals breaking in too many directions, which is exactly the condition under which a patient predator does well. Groups that stay small hold together under pressure. The population learns this the hard way, repeatedly, because the pressure to aggregate is constant and the cost of over-aggregating only shows up when something arrives.
For everything larger, Hypsilophodon is the roster's baseline prey and its most annoying one. They are worth almost nothing in food and they cost real time and occasionally real vision to catch. A predator that specialises in them is a predator that has run out of better options, and the community reads a diet log full of Hypsilophodon exactly that way — not as a crime, but as evidence that something upstream in the food web has gone wrong.
